Samsidine Diatta had led ASMAS since 2015 and did not seek a third term. Before the vote, he urged candidates to run a campaign focused on projects and programmes.
Two candidates stood: Cheikh Oumar Aïdara and Ibrahima Fall, a lecturer-researcher at INSEPS. Ibrahima Fall was elected president.
